Yoreci Núñez y Allan Elvir, Farms El Naranjal - Los tres pinos

Yoreci and her husband Allan don’t fit the average description of a coffee farmers couple.

They are both in their twenties and while many people of their generation abandon their family’s land and prefer a job in the city, this young couple has only quite recently discovered that they actually lover working on the small plot of land that Allan inherited from his grandfather.

It must be said that in a certain way Yoreci and Allan are in a privileged situation. Yoreci’s a university graduated engineer who works full time at Cafesmo as our quality control manager. Every day she can see, feel, smell, and of course taste every batch of coffee that Cafesmo is preparing for export. The larger washed lots with 81-83 SCA scores that form the bulk of our inventory. The SCA 84 and 85 washed lots that we produce in still relatively large batches.

And of course also the micro-lots in every shape and form that you can think of.

As she works so closely with our Q-grader, our team of agronomists, our versatile director, and the auditor teams for the various certifications that we carry as an organization, Yoreci is well versed in all aspects and stages of the coffee preparation as well as conservation. On top of that, she often welcomes visitors from all corners of the globes. Small specialty roasters, medium importers, experts in water waste, birdlife, agroforestry, or other facets that are important for the proper management of a coffee finca.

What Allan and Yoreci lacked, at least until a few years ago, was their own land and the practical experience in the field that is indispensable for anyone who wants to cultivate coffee, or any crop for that matter. So, in 2017, Allan decided to start working with his grandfather, who, sadly, died a few years later.

Thankfully, he knew Yoreci by then, who not only consoled him, but also started working with him on their finca, which they had now inherited from Allan’s deceased granddad. Because Yoreci knew, from ample experience, that micro-lots had much better profiles and also filled their creators with more pride and joy, the young couple soon decided to try their own luck at the delicate preparation of their first small batch.

That is how, in early 2022, they sold a bag of natural coffee to a specialty bean importer in Taiwan. Allan and Yoreci hope that this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship, and they are determined to increase both the quality and quantity of their micro-lot production.

As they are young, smart, eager to learn, and have daily access to a vast pool of knowhow and expertise, we cannot wait to see how their coffees evolve in the years to come!
