Erlin Geremías Hernández, Finca El Coyol

I’ve lived surrounded by coffee for my entire life. My granddad was a coffee grower, as was my dad. Nowadays, I work with my younger brother. We own our finca together, although it’s in my name legally.

During the high season, when we need to pick the beans, my brother and I hire other family members, to come and help us. There’s far too much work for two people during those months.  

But even though we work a lot, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. We laugh a lot, have lunch together, and of course we always drink coffee together during breaks. The work never feels like a burden, at least not mentally.

Recently, I started to prepare micro-lots as well. It requires a lot of additional effort and you only know if it’s worthwhile months later, if and when you’ve been able to sell the lots. But it’s fun to do. It’s also I’m increasingly proud of as my brother and I are both getting better at preparing them, and our profiles slowly gain in complexity, in flavor patterns, and in quality.

Now, we’re at the point where we feel ready to start working directly with one or two roasters, preferably roasters we can team up with for several years, to prepare lots in line with their wishes and the demand of their final consumers.

Luckily, Cafesmo decided to start a youth group, of which we are a part. It allows us to present our coffees as a group for blends, and receive fairer prices for the higher quality that we are able to produce. On top of that we were offered the opportunity to add our own, individual profile to the website, and add our micro-lots to the sample bags that are shipped worldwide. Soon enough, we’ll know which roasters are the most enthusiastic about our coffees.

Finca Facts

A little less than a hectare, between 1300 and 1400 meters. 

We only grow the lempira varietal.

Plantain and banana trees for shadow and also for personal consumption, as well as pepeto, a local tree that offers abundant shadow, as well as fruits for cattle or pigs. 

Our finca is FTO certified.

This farm is Rain Forest Alliance certified.
